The lushly improvised piano of Naoko Sakata is guided by tarot and a musical journey of self-knowledge on her new album Infinity, her second for Anna von Hausswolff’s Pomperipossa Records. Infinity captures once again the magnetic energy of her playing, which sits boldly outside of genre boxes. "Playing is mystic for me," she says. "I play until the real world is left behind, until I don't feel or think about anything; about people's judgements; about myself; about the world."
The artwork for Infinity includes the kanji sign for sky 空 and galaxy 宙 on the album cover, symbolising the skyward soaring in the album's sound. When she was playing, Naoko says she had a sense in which she was ascending; rising upward into an infinite space. Spiritual guidance for the album came from the tarot – she often pulled The Star and the The Chariot around the time of recording – the latter was significant: a card depicting a knight in yogic pose, on a chariot flanked by sphinx. "This card came to me so many times. He has a mask, and he's a soldier, but this card asks: who are you? Who are you without the armour?" These questions, and the self-knowledge they demand, is the album's engine. It is a journey towards unmasking our true selves, and a symbol of strength that fuels a confident leap forward.
Recorded over two solid days, Infinity is wholly improvised, with no plans made or intentions set before the recording. Naoko first began performing in this way in 2018, and Infinity is already her third solo album, following 2021's Dancing Spirits and 2020's Inner Planets. "I felt a lot of progression from the last album to this one," she says, "I learned so much about numbers and tarot, and was asking questions about myself. I recorded until midnight – capturing everything without stopping, recording from a place of no judgement." She looks to nobody for inspiration and instead channels the energies she feels around her, which are woven into her playing as she becomes one with the music. "It almost feels like I become vibrations or particles – like I become the music itself," she says. "I become totally consumed by the energy in the sound, and the music and me becomes the same thing; I have my own frequency that becomes music."
The improvised tracks are non-sequential, numbered instead for their place in the session. Across six extended improvisations Naoko channels energies into rippling piano and glittering high notes; at times she drops into frantic low end, hammering at the keys with an existential fervour, before soaring across the keys to draw out delicate and airy patterns. Heavy chords are repeated; her playing moves glittering and fluid like water, laments are sketched before being overcome. There are moments when the feelings became so intense she began to sing. Closing piece 'Improvisation 13' was the final piece from the recording session, its contemplative and easy playing articulating a moment in which Naoko made peace with herself, as top notes dance lightfooted on a gently repeating chord.
Naoko's improvised instrumental music is confidently itself; she has created a genre all of her own, with an emotional depth that puts it outside of easy pop boxes, and a freedom that sits outside of traditional forms of jazz or classical. Music has always been something close and natural to her identity. She knew there was a place within reach where herself and the music were not separate, and which she wanted to channel, but her parents and teachers had other ideas. She has rejected the confinement of the expectations placed on her, and walked her own path since she was young, when being herself was often interpreted as rebellion. At one point, her self-expression through the way she dressed led to her having to leave school. "Everyone called me rebellious or experimental, she says "but I was just doing what was natural. I wanted to be true to me." The same was true in her piano playing. Her mother was a piano teacher and she has played the piano since she was 3, but never wanted to read music. Instead, she would learn by heart. She moved into jazz to look for freer modes of playing, but found the same conventions and imitative performances as she had found in classical music. It wasn't until she left Japan and moved to Sweden, settling in Gothenburg, that her unique style of genreless, freeform improvisational playing could emerge.
There may be no lyrics and no titles, but in the absence of words Naoko speaks louder than most in the clarity and intensity of her playing, through the connection she creates between herself and the piano. Infinity is a captivating emotional journey of knowledge and self-discovery, where the listener might find something of themselves in the honesty and authenticity Naoko channels in her singular and invigorating music.

NAOKO SAKATA
Dancing Spirits
:::
The piano solo album by Japanese musician Naoko Sakata entitled “Dancing Spirits” is now available for pre-order and will be released on March 26, 2021, on Pomperipossa Records. A hand-numbered limited edition of 400 copies, including
12 ́ ́ golden (!) vinyl and printed inner sleeve.
“Dancing Spirits” was recorded during two days at Annedalskyrkan, a church in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden. The album was recorded and produced by Filip Leyman and consists of seven improvisations, played by Naoko Sakata and performed on a Steinway grand piano. They represent the most authentic expression of the artist's musicality and her incomparable creative talent.
The music you will hear on this album has not been written previously, but it is the daughter of the moment and therefore unrepeatable, pure improvisation. In addition to the artist's freedom of expression, there is nothing else. “Dancing Spirits” is not a canonical listening and is almost impossible to classify into a genre or a category. Rather, it is the result of an experimental approach to music, where every single note follows the previous one without a determined principle other than that of absolute freedom. In “Dancing Spirits” Naoko Sakata shows an aspect of musical experimentation that takes this definition to its most extreme limits. It is an artistic achievement that joins the world of natural phenomena because it is unregulated in its manifestations, impetuous in its pace, incomprehensible in its laws, faithful and coherent only to one thing: its existence.
Naoko Sakata describes her approach to music as follows:
“When I sit in front of the piano, I, as a person, disappear. My body becomes a conduit for expressing the music that I can hear in my head. There are no obstacles to its realisation and I don't follow rules on how to make it happen. It is at the same time something natural and highly spiritual, sacred and wild, something that lives in a moment in time and only in that, before disappearing forever ”.
“Dancing Spirits” is an album that offers a new interpretation of music, of how important it is to listen to the creative impulses within us, to indulge them without obstacles, to free them without fear. It is also a unique window to the world of Naoko Sakata and on her peculiar interpretation of the meaning of art. A meaning that can only be heard, but not explained further.

"Silently the tower burns.
Swallowing the darkness fromwithin.
A blinding torch buried deep in the sands of a sealess shore.
Clutching at the slowly shifting bones of a million dead.
Your eyes slide from their sockets.
Yet still the sight remains.
Yet still the stench remains.
Yet still the screams remain.
Resounding from within.
Not even a whisper to your name."

Dark Morph is a collaboration between sound and visual artists Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson.
The release is dedicated to the oceans of planet earth and to the lifeforms that live in and around them, with the duo stating: “The exploitation of the oceans, in conjunction with the heavy pollution (from plastic waste to nuclear radio-activity) has to stop, and be replaced by collaborative manners co-operating with all life on or globe.”
Carl Michael von Hausswolff is a renowned artist, active in the art and music world with solo and collaborative projects for many years, and Jónsi’s work in the Icelandic group Sigur Rós, as well as his collaboration with composer Alex Somers, is recognised across the globe. Dark Morph formed when the two artists met aboard the M/Y Dardanella ship in Fiji invited by TBA21–Academy in 2018. The ship is a creative platform equipped with sound and video recording systems, and the result of the duo’s first voyage was released in May 2019 at the Biennale di Venezia. This second album consists of material recorded in Fiji and Tonga and was produced and mixed in GeeJam Studios in Jamaica in January 2019.
Side X is one 20-minute composition entitled ‘Dive-In’ - a drone soundtrack made to accompany a video installation by the Danish art collective SUPERFLEX and was premiered in Palm Springs later last year.Side Y opens with the more danceable ‘Dark Wave,’ where recordings of whales and shrimp in the Pacific Ocean, sounds from the ship and distorted vocals are set to a hypnotic beat. The third piece, ‘Humpack Whale Choir,’ uses whale-song recorded with hydrophone microphones by Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza assisted by Dark Morph in August 2019.
‘Dark Morph II’ will be available on digital download and 12” vinyl on May 1st. Pre-order here.

drøne ::: THE STILLING
release date: 10th January 2020
Pomperipossa Records # PRLP11 Vinyl & DL + bonus track ‘black stone’. Limited edition of 200 copies.
The 4th album by drøne, (Mark Van Hoen & Mike Harding), is the 3rd for Anna von Hausswolff's label, Pomperipossa Records. Featuring Zachary Paul on violins, Charlie Campagna (bass and ‘cello) and Katt Newlon on ‘cello, the strings add lush, warm layers to a darker, edgier sound. Gabi Strong debuts on guitar and the voices of a host of vocalists inc. Claire Belhassine, Celia Eydeland, Bana Haffar, Pepa Ivanova, Nour Mobarak & Brisa Romero.
With the trademark drøne sounds of static, radio voices, field recordings, modular synthesizer and found sounds, recording chance sounds right up to the final mix add to the dynamism and energy of the album.
Scream - its all you can do now. Overwhelming, scatter-gun information delivery has us confused, bowel churningly fearful and appalled at the nature of the changing times. We are biologically, psychologically and emotionally able to cope with slow evolutionary change, but struggle with revolutionary, violent distortion or mutation. This leaves us anxious and even desperate for a firmer footing.
The Stilling, a phenomenon whereby the wind speed on the planet seems to be slowing down for no known scientific reason, explores this state of discomfort and perplexion.
Time spins. The glass is falling...

Our beautiful Nebulosa is back with new album "Dark Myths"
Pomperipossa Records proudly release "Dark Myths" on September 25th.
A limited vinyl 12" release of 250 copies.
What you are about to listen to are four music compositions which have been derived from sound experimentation and free improvisation - which in turn, has been crystallized into a new, in-generate format.
"Dark Myths" narrates a subconsciously written story of mystical depths.
An ancient call. A primal echo from a distant cosmos that is constantly expanding and fluctuating. Its nuances are intangible yet colourful, vibrant and ferocious. If the concept of 'myth' aims to explain mystery, "Dark myths" is the antithesis, leaving the mystery unsolved.
Through an introspective and mesmerizing journey that leads to a nature of mythical symbolism, Joel Fabiansson frees his creativ mind towards gloomy landscapes and rhythms; unveiling a deeper side of consciousness while giving you a sense of wonder.
Pomperipossa Records is incredibly proud and happy to present one of our absolute dream releases "Brev från Leksand" by Daniel Ögren. Ögren is in our opinion one of the most unique artists in Sweden. He lives in the shadow of his music and while he's still mostly unknown by the great mass he has started to gather a strong alliance of followers and fans. We at Pomperipossa Records are eager to share his new album "Brev från Leksand" which is his strongest work to date, out October 26th, 2018.
Limited VINYL 12´ edition of 200 copies. Screen printed and aquarelle painted by Anna von Hausswolff (who has also made the cover artwork). All copies will be wrapped in delicate transparent paper and sealed with a black Pomperipossa wax stamp. All copies will be more or less different from each other since they will be painted by hand. Pre-order is now available.
Listen to first single BYRVIKEN
"Brev från Leksand" is a continuation of Ögren´s earlier work "Brev till Kristinehamn" (released on Havtorn Records). It´s produced, recorded and mixed by Ögren himself. The music is composed by Ögren and recorded layer by layer, mostly played by Ögren on various instruments. Compared to earlier works "Brev från Leksand" has a more rhythmic character, and has been produced and executed throughout a longer period of time. On this album Ögren has invited lots of great musicians to help shape and articulate the original musical landscape that is Daniel Ögren (see musician list below).
On "Brev från Leksand" (translated as "Letter from Leksand") Ögren mostly draws inspiration from the geographic environment that is his home, but he has also been inspired by other places that have made a great impact on him. All titles have a meaning, but the music has to speak for itself, as we wrote before: Ögren likes to live in the shadow of his music.
This special and characteristic music has its roots in South American folk music, soul, nordic folk music, and film soundtracks, but when you listen to Ögren´s music it´s very hard to define it. It seems familiar, ancient and alien at the same time. With cinematic gestures he manages to create a completely new universe full of strange and fascinating life.

Pomperipossa Records is pleased to reveal the debut of Anne Gry Friis Kristensen - under her moniker Fabienne Erato.
Release date: 24th of May
Limited 12´vinyl edition of 150 copies
An album that has been composed on a Buchla Music Easel and captured on a portable tape recorder. Fabienne Erato creates sounds that seem to come from a deep abyss, where a not-yet-known conscience started navigating her own existence. Far away from the surface and its laws, her music recreates time and its rules. It slows down seconds, until it forges a calm disoriented feeling, where you both get lost and find yourself again. Fabienne Erato frees her creative intuition in silences and repetitions, through a slow, hypnotic, meditative process - a sublime genesis of an original idea, that has been sleeping for centuries.
A quiet, profound and evocative kind of music, which has the ability of creating a poetic, never-static image of itself.
This work has no name. It is accompanied only by a poem by Maria Von Hausswolff and wild animals/field prints on copper plates by Pernille Kløvedal Helweg.
Text by Gianluca Grasselli

DEAD MAGIC features five songs extending over 47 uncompromising minutes.
Anna von Hausswolff has announced her fourth album, ‘Dead Magic’ for release on March 2nd via City Slang and Pomperipossa Records. Along with the announcement, she has unleashed a first track, the spell-binding “The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra” and confirmed a series of live dates, including a show at London's Tufnell Park Dome on March 12th.
The Gothenburg-based artist keeps her introduction to the record enigmatic as ever, stating simply:
“Dear listeners.
This is the first track from my new album, Dead Magic!
Me, my band and Randall Dunn spent 9 days in Copenhagen recording this record. The great pipe organ you’re hearing is a 20th century instrument located in Marmor Kirken, "The Marble Church", Copenhagen.
Here is a poem for you by the Swedish writer Walter Ljungquist (1900-1974):
”Take the fate of a human being, a thin pathetic line that contours and encircles an infinite and unknown silence. It is in this very silence, in an only imagined and unknown centre, that legends are born. Alas! That is why there are no legends in our time. Our time is a time deprived of silence and secrets; in their absence no legends can grow."
Please enjoy the music.
Yours sincerely,
Anna von Hausswolff"

‘Fibolae’, on 12´ vinyl is set for release on December 8th 2017.
Over the last twenty five years Robin Rimbaud – Scanner has traversed the experimental terrain between sound, space and image, connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres – a partial list would include sound design, film scores, computer music, avant garde, contemporary composition, large-scale multimedia performances, product design, architecture, fashion design, rock music and jazz.
‘Fibolae’ offers up a world that splinters between melancholia and penetrating energy. Combining digital technologies, software and live instrumentation it is both a rhetoric of mourning and a celebration of music to empower. Warm, organic, sensual, passionate and frequently angry, it’s an album that radiates with possibilities.
With a catalogue busy with commissions, soundtracks and strange projects ‘Fibolae’ is the first studio album since 2009’s Rockets, ‘Unto the Edge of Rockets’ (Bine Music). In this time much has changed – he lost his entire family and left the comfort of a familiar city, London, to live in a former textile factory in the UK to re-invent his life.
As to the meaning of the title, ‘Fibolae’? There is none. It was a word that appeared to Scanner in a dream, at a time of great challenges in his life. The fact that his unconscious mind could conjure up such inventions that offer no history and context was appealing and yet it was suggestive, playful and open.

DRØNE ::: A PERFECT BLIND
Disruption between then and now/memory and presence, dulcimer, psaltery, ‘cellos, violas and violin embroider radio, static, stray voices and electronics… ‘a perfect blind’ is the second album by drøne (Mark Van Hoen & Mike Harding) with an array of guest artists, including label supremo Anna von Hausswolff, dreamer and composer Paul Haslinger, field recordist and sound designer Charlie Campagna and Touch artists Bethan Kellough & Philip Jeck. Strings by Seattle-based Marie Takahashi and Oleg Belyaev are also layered into this complex and perhaps more musical offering. Moving in all directions, ‘a perfect blind’ continues where ‘reversing into the future’ [pomperipossa records, 2016] left off.
‘a perfect blind’ was conceived and designed in Los Angeles with organ recordings from London (at Union Chapel), short wave radio, treated voices and other archaic sound sources.
A stunning front cover image by Maria von Hausswolff and miss-taken typography by Nico embrace this sense of dislocation; as the mediaeval language which enfolds our collapsing 19th Century institutions fails to find relevance, our sense of entrapment in the old is accompanied by an assault on the senses. The destabilising effect of “post-truth” adds to our sense of unbelonging, of being elsewhere, observers not participants.
‘a perfect blind’ is the term used for the best possible observation point where the viewer is unseen by the object of interest. Is this the best place to be? Memories which slowly fade away, also reverse back from the past shoving us into the future…

DRØNE ::: REVERSING INTO THE FUTURE
Side B this strange life ll ::: 19:57
"A very hot day in the hills above Los Angeles… only possible to work in the mornings because of the sweltering afternoon heat, so all a bit frantic, but with a kink in time. There is no wifi-controlled air conditioning; the car is electric-powered and charging up. It has barely rained for months, (if not years) and the hoses are working overtime. Its an analogue session; Mark’s modular synth set up is working furiously and overheating. We are pushing sounds through and seeing what works… and things gradually take shape. The forms seem to determine themselves; how much control do we have? How much do we want? Some peculiar things start to happen and the haze bends. Some of the sounds seem alive and are quick to reform as we struggle to contain them, like trying to stuff snakes into a bag. The sounds moan and sing, forming their own phonemes.”

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF ::: THE MIRACULOUS
Critically acclaimed artist and musician Anna von Hausswolff is finally back with her long awaited third studio album. The new album “The Miraculous” floats like a ghost, from the subdued elegance of the title track, and the bewitching “En Ensam Vandrare”, to the unbearably tense, Godspeed You! Black Emperor atmospherics of “Discovery” and the brutal, Swans-meets-Black Sabbath savagery of “Come Wander With Me / Deliverance”.
The album will be available in November on 2 LP and CD. One of the LP’s will have an etched backside with artwork done by Anna von Hausswolff.
